From the contest website:

This holiday season, while we start the long wait for our February issue, we’ve decided to hold a writing contest. The centerpiece being everyone’s favorite Christmas creature: Krampus.

Krampus is a creature straight from the yuletide folklore of Alpine countries. Thought to be older than jolly old St. Nick himself, and have roots in pagan traditions of Solstice and Yule, this devil-like beast was known for his cheery sadism around the holidays. If you were a naughty boy or girl, you weren’t given coal. No, Santa lets us off easy. Instead, Krampus would take a bundle of reed and beat you bloody. There may or may not be a sack involved, and some cases of outright kidnapping to god knows where.

Now who would make a better mascot for our magazine for the holiday season?

Contest rules

Starting December 11th, you have 12 days to write, edit and submit a dark Christmas themed story (updated—new deadline January 1st). The catch is the story has to be about Krampus in some way. However you choose to use him.

Don’t know too much about this yule-sadist? That’s fine. Here are a few resources to help get you started

  1. Thank you for posting this! My story didn’t win anything, but I am going to try and submit it somewhere else.
Some of the places I have in mind for submitting it only accept previously unpublished material, which is why I won’t post it on my blog, but I’ll e-mail it to anyone who’s interested.

    • Sorry to hear you didn’t win anything, but I’m glad you submitted! Best of luck with it 🙂
